ILA/ Reading:

This week's story is Grandma Essie's Covered Wagon. Do any of your relatives ever talk about traveling across the country in a covered wagon?

There will be a Selection Test and Spelling Test on Friday.

In Grammar, we will begin learning about verbs.

BookIt! calendars will be due from all students in both 5A and 5B the week we return to school.

5B book reviews will also be due on January 5th, 2009!

Math: 5A Math is continuing to learn and practice fraction concepts. Students should have reviewed chapter 9 in its entirety during the break. Students will spend this week reviewing the concepts from the chapter during class. A test on chapter 9 will be given Friday, January 9th.

5B Math we have been working on chapter 10 and we will continue to move forward in this chapter which covers adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions with like and unlike denominators. I plan to spend the first day or two reviewing the first part of the chapter, which we have already covered. A quiz will be given on Wednesday, January 7th. We will then begin the second half of chapter 10.

Also note both homerooms now have access to www.firstinmath.com. This is an incredible opportunity for the students to practice math computation at home. If you have questions about the program or need your child's username and password, please email his/her homeroom teacher. This website will help all students to develop better computation skills. Both classes also will use the program while in school.

Please help students learn their division and multiplication facts through 12. These are especially important now that we have started fractions. Some math websites you may want to try at home are:

www.coolmath-games.com

Social Studies: We will be completing Chapter 3 this week in class. Students will have an in-class evalation on the second part of the chapter rather than a traditional quiz or test. This will include a map activity, which we started working on in class before the break. I hope to begin the evalation on Thursday of this week. We will then begin Chapter 4 on European Settlements.

Science: We are continuing to learn about energy. This week we will review the material covered prior to the holidays and learn about how energy can change from one form to another. There is a test tentatively scheduled for Friday, January 16th on this chapter.

Religion: Students will begin chapter 8 this week. This chapter focuses on Jesus as both God and man and how Jesus is portrayed in scripture and in images.

A few last thoughts and reminders.....

Thank you to everyone who made the Holiday Party a success! Everyone had a wonderful time.

Just in time for the New Year, help your students set a goal to be more organized. Successful students take time during each class, to fill-in their assignment pads, and to place homework assignments in their Take-Home Folders. They also come to class prepared each day with all of their assignments completed and all of their needed materials.

Additionally, be sure to check your student's Take Home Folder each night. Notices from school are sent out almost daily. Look for corrected papers on Tuesdays. All test and quiz papers need to be signed and returned to school each Wednesday.

Please remember that the December BookIt! is a requirement for both 5A and 5B. All students should be reading on a regular basis, please make sure they are keeping track on the BookIt! calendar! Thank you!
